George Woodrow "Woody" Burnett, Edna, Kansas entered his eternal home on November 30, 2016 at the Presbyterian Manor, Parsons, KS. He was born November 25, 1915 to George W. and Minnie Campbell Burnett near Monticello, Kentucky. The family moved to Kansas in 1920 and settled on a farm near Edna. He graduated from Edna High School in 1934 and from Parsons Junior College in 1936. Woodrow became a Christian at an early age and was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Edna, serving as Sunday School Superintendent at age sixteen. He was also a member of the men's quartet, youth leader, choir member, song leader, lay preacher, and ordained deacon. In high school, he excelled in sports, especially football. He played fullback and achieved a punt average of 63 yards in kicking the ball. He also played trumpet in the band and loved to sing and whistle throughout his life. Woodrow and Virginia V. Dent were married September 30, 1940. They had two sons, Gilbert and James, and lived on the family farm where he raised registered Hereford cattle. In 1965, he was appointed Labette County Executive Director of the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service, an agency of the USDA. He held this post for twenty years. Virginia preceded him in death on November 20, 1965. Following his retirement from ASCS, he was elected to the office of Labette County Commissioner, Second District. Woodrow and Ida E. Tapp were married March 10, 1968. The couple lived in Edna and was involved in local real estate development. They also enjoyed fishing in the Ozarks. Ida passed away on October 25, 2004. Woodrow loved studying the Bible, discussing doctrine, singing, whistling, talking about livestock and farming, and having his family around him. His gracious expressions of love will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Woodrow is survived by his children and their spouses: Gilbert Burnett and Jane of Edna, James Burnett and Barbara of Waterford, Michigan, and Karen and Jim Falls of Gulfport, Mississippi. Also, surviving are his grandchildren and their spouses; Pastors Andrew and Dawn Burnett of Omaha, Nebraska, Gregg Burnett and Heather of Allen, TX, Michelle Mays and Ernie of McKinney, TX, and Kathy Moore and Erny of Gulfport, Mississippi. He is survived by his nieces and nephews Beverly Knewtson of Nixa, Missouri, David Knewtson and Linda of Nixa, Missouri, Richard Morissette and Judy of Ocala, Florida, Carole Cragg and Kevin of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, and Del Morissette and Diane of Nine Mile Falls, Washington. He is survived by 16 great-grandchildren and a host of friends. The memorial service will be Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in the First Baptist Church, Edna. Visitation will be on Monday, December, 5, from 6-8 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow the service at the North Edna Cemetery.
