Rolla Elbert Layton, 83, of Coffeyville passed away Tuesday, May 2, 2017, at his home. He was born on November 8, 1933, at home in Bartlett, KS to Rolla E. and Mabel I. (Utley) Layton. R.E. spent his early years and attended grade school in Bartlett, KS, His mother passed away when R.E. was young, his father later married Fleta Davis who helped raise the children as her own. He graduated from Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville in 1951, attended Coffeyville Community College for one year, and completed his education at the University of Kansas graduating from the School of Pharmacy in 1955. On July 29, 1956, he married Patricia Frances Roberts at the First United Methodist Church in Coffeyville. Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville where R.E. served the community as pharmacist and business owner until his retirement from Columbia Drug in 2000. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and the Tri-M class for 60 years. R.E. especially loved the time spent with his family. Survivors include his wife, Patricia of the home; his children, Jeffrey Layton and wife Patrice of Bella Vista, AR, Carrie Bernauer and husband Rick of Leawood, KS, and Matthew Layton and wife Julia of Spokane, WA, son-in-law, Scott Nichols and wife Millie of Olathe, KS; sister, Linda Jack and husband Bill of Owasso, OK; niece Sherry Nash and husband Dick; grandchildren, Madeline Frances Tracy and husband Paul, Rory Jeremiah Layton and fiancé Christina Dougherty, Clara Jeanne and Elsa Marie Bernauer, Reo Dean, Aria Marie and Rianna Celine Layton, Seth Ray and Raleigh Brice Nichols, Isabella Marcum and Randall Marcum; great-grandchildren, Gabriella Marie and Vincent Patrick Tracy; and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Lyle Wayne Layton; sister, Joyce McCray; and daughter, Anne Marie Nichols. A Memorial Service celebrating R.E.'s life will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 6, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Nicole Schwartz-Eck officiating. Inurnment will be in Lake Creek Cemetery west of Bartlett, KS. The family will receive friends prior to the service Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church. The family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church or Coffeyville Public Library; contribution may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W.
