Bobby was born September 16, 1927, to his father, Bernard H. "Bob" and mother, Ethel (Carlson) Jones, in rural Angola, Kansas. He attended his freshmen year of high school at Valeda High School, Valeda, Kansas, and graduated from Labette County Community High School, Altamont, Kansas, in 1946. Bobby was active in many high school activities including: L Club, Mechanics Club, Boxing Club, Football, Basketball, Track, and served as Senior Class President.

In the summer of 1945, Bobby met the love his life, Colene Harden. On June 2, 1948, Bobby and Colene were married at the Altamont Baptist Church. The couple made their home on the family farm, Deer Creek Farm, and recently celebrated their 69 Year Wedding Anniversary. Bobby was a farmer/rancher and loved the life he and Colene shared together. Bobby and Colene are the parents of three children: Tommy, Janie, and Scottie. During their children's school years they were always supportive of their children in all their sports and extracurricular activities seldom missing a game or an activity. Through the years they loved watching their grandchildren play sports and participate in their school activities.

Bobby loved sports, traveling (especially vacations to the Colorado Mountains), hunting, taking pictures, telling jokes, and spending time with his family.

Bobby was a member of the Angola United Methodist Church where he held several offices in the church and Sunday school. While his children were in high school, he served as President of the Labette County High School Athletic Booster Club and was always a proud supporter of the Grizzlies. In 2006, Bobby received the Bob Holtzman Basketball Service Award. Bobby was recognized by The Parsons News as the 1986 Farmer of the Year and received the Kansas Bankers Association Soil Conservation Award in 1998.
