Deryl Richard Copeland, 81, of Coffeyville, Kansas passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at CRMC. Deryl was born on September 29, 1935 in Cherryvale, Kansas to Harley and Margie (Williams) Copeland. He grew up in Cherryvale where he attended school until joining the United States Navy to proudly serve his country on March 2, 1953. While serving in the U.S. Navy he earned the rank of E-3 Seaman (SN). He served on the U.S.S. Philip and was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Medal, two Good Conduct Medals and the National Defense Medal. Deryl received his honorable discharge on August 9, 1961. On March 4, 1959 he married the love of his life, L. Kay Oskison in Miami, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in Coffeyville where they raised their 4 children. Deryl spent some time as a semi driver; over the years he worked for Pepsi and Guy Potato Chips as a route salesman. In his younger years he enjoyed bowling. Deryl was a member of the Tyro Christian Church. He served as an Elder and a Deacon for the church. For many years he taught Sunday school classes. His main hobby was fishing; mostly for bass and crappy. When the kids were young he would take them to Grand Lake some weekends for fishing trips. In addition to his loving wife, Kay of the home; he is survived by his children, Sheila Logan of Coffeyville, KS, Deryl "Rick" Copeland, Jr. of Coffeyville, KS, Angela Petty and husband, Lee of Liberty, MO; grandchildren, Ethan Logan of Coffeyville, KS, Kyle Copeland and Chelsi Copeland both of Topeka, KS, Sarah Norton and husband, Mike of Wallingford, KY, Gabrielle Carroll and husband, Craig of Ft. Sills, OK, Caleb Petty of Marshall, MO, Elijah Petty of Johnston City, IL, Eden Dillon and husband, Chad of Ft. Carson, CO and sixteen great grandchildren. Deryl was preceded in death by his parents, Harley and Margie Copeland; youngest son, Darren Copeland who passed away at 11 years old; brothers, Jack, Harley Jr. and Pete Copeland; sister, Shirlee Nipper. Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Westside Christian Church in Coffeyville, KS. Evangelist Nathan Boldt will officiate. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date at Fairview Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions can be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to the Tyro Christian Church and can be left at the funeral home or mailed in c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 N. Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
