Obituary of Bobby Joe Russell

B.J. "Joe" Russell, 81, longtime Caney area resident passed away Sunday, October 1, 2017, at Medicalodge of Independence. He was born on January 16, 1936, in rural Caney to Chester Glen and Pauline F. (Roper) Russell. He grew up east of Liberty where he attended Pleasant Valley Grade School and graduated from Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville and attended Coffeyville Community College. He was a veteran of U.S. Navy serving from 1955 until receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1959. On December 19, 1959, he married Norma Rigdon at the Caney United Methodist Church. Following their marriage they made their home east of Caney where they raised their family. Joe was employed as a maintenance supervisor at Phillips Petroleum Co. in Bartlesville, OK for many years. He was a member of the Caney United Methodist Church. In his spare time he enjoyed raising cattle on their farm and woodworking, but his great joy was spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife Norma of the home, his children, Kristi Frisbee and husband, Bob of Girard, KS, Steven Russell and wife, Jana of Bartlesville, OK, Kimberly Russell and partner Paula Wheatley of Caney, and Kendra Grant and husband, Mark of Caney; one brother, William "Bill" Russell and wife, Evelyn; and eight grandchildren, Bobby Frisbee and wife, Jennifer of Houston, TX, Melanie Frisbee of Yukon, OK, Russell Frisbee of Girard, Jonathan Russell and Matthew Russell both of Bartlesville, OK, Garrett Grant, Renee Grant, and Gage Grant all of Caney. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers-in-law, Joe Halligan, Dean Rigdon, Keith Rigdon, and Glenn Rigdon; and one sister-in-law, Beverly Halligan. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 5, 2017, at the Tyro Christian Church in Tyro, KS with Jeff Davis and the family of B.J. "Joe" Russell officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery in Caney. Friends may call on Wednesday from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the donor's favorite charity; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
