Obituary of Dan Lee Atkinson

Dan Lee Atkinson, 68, of Coffeyville passed away Sunday, October 22, 2017, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. He was born on February 28, 1949, in Coffeyville to Jim and Mary (Hepner) Atkinson. Dan grew up and attended school in Coffeyville and graduated from Wayside High School in Wayside, KS. Dan was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the U.S. Army. Following his discharge he returned to Coffeyville. In 1977, he married Marcia Willbern at Wichita, KS. Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville where Dan was employed at the railroad, Aptus, and later at Cessna. After retiring he worked as a security guard. His wife preceded him in death on March 19, 2007. Dan attended the Dearing Christian Church in Dearing. He enjoyed horses, and playing golf, but his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include one son, Daniel Atkinson and wife, Amber of Coffeyville; four grandchildren, Karyssa Hall, Bryce Atkinson, Brayden Atkinson and Kinsley Atkinson; his parents, Jim and Mary Atkinson of Coffeyville; two brothers, Chuck Atkinson and wife, Angie of Coffeyville, and Joe Atkinson and wife, Hope of Grove, OK; one sister, Kristi Howard and husband Norman of Bella Vista, AR; his father-in-law, Damon Willbern of Coffeyville; and sister-in-law, Connie Graham and husband Jon of The Woodlands, TX. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 27, 2017, at the Dearing Christian Church with Pastor Jamie Regis officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memorial Park with Military Honors conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1022 and American Legion Post #20. Friends may call on Thursday, October 26, 2017, from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
