Obituary of Nila Louise Phipps

Nila Louise Phipps, 88, of Richmond Missouri former longtime Coffeyville resident, passed away Sunday, April 16, 2018 at Ray County Memorial Hospital in Richmond, Missouri. She was born on August 18, 1929 at Coffeyville, Kansas to George and Nelle (Cole) Scott. Nila grew up and attended school in Coffeyville graduating from Field Kindley High School and Coffeyville Community College. In November 1948 she married Norman Phipps at Coffeyville. Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville where they raised their daughters. Nila was employed for many years as Secretary for Joe and Howard Funk at Funk Mfg. Co. and later for Cooper Industries and John Deere Coffeyville Works until her retirement. Her husband preceded her in death on May 16, 2009/ Nila was a member of the National Secretaries Association, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1022 and American Legion Post #20 Auxiliaries. She enjoyed playing the piano and traveling. But her greatest joy was spending time with her family especially her children and grandchildren. Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Dr. John Scowley of Richmond, Missouri, and Debbie and Paul Melies of Coffeyville, Kansas; and four grandchildren, Erica Scowley, John Scott Scowley, Brian Melies and Eric Melies. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Nelle Scott; her husband, Norman Phipps and one daughter, Pamela Phipps. Graveside Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2018 at the Fairview Cemetery Veterans Memorial Patio with Pastor Nicole Schwartz-Eck of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memorial Park. Friends may call on Friday, May 4, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Foundation in Richmond, MO, or Coffeyville Friends of Animals; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
