Joanne M. Wittner (Biggerstaff) , 85, of Coffeyville, KS passed away peacefully in Coffeyville on March 25, 2017. Joanne was born May 17, 1931 in Topeka, KS to Frank and Signa Leona (Cross) Biggerstaff. She grew up in the Coffeyville area and was active in the Busy Band 4-H club. She graduated from Field Kindley High School in Coffevyille, KS in May 1948 and married the love of her life, Herbert Wittner on August 27, 1948. Joanne worked as a school teacher in Coffeyville until starting their family. Joanne and Herb traveled throughout the United States while Herb worked for Boeing and Lockheed. With 7 children to keep her busy, Joanne maintained the home and lovingly raised their brood. Once their children were grown Joanne and Herb became managers for Motel 6 in Dallas, TX and Tulsa, OK. Sadly Joanne lost her husband of almost 40 years to cancer in Aug 1987. Joanne graduated from Coffeyville Community College at the amazing age of 60. For over 20 years she worked as a disaster coordinator for the Coffeyville Chapter of the American Red Cross, serving at disasters in Florida, Texas, and Iowa. She also assisted with local disasters in Parsons, Baxter Springs, and Pittsburg, KS, as well as, helping the needy thru the Red Cross office in Coffeyville. She was an instructor of disaster classes and served 3 years on the local Board of Directors. Joanne was a member of the Montgomery County Genealogical Society for many years serving 5 years as Secretary Treasurer. Joanne is survived by her 7 children: Lucille McConnell and Terry of Tyro, KS; David Wittner and D'Ann from Jamestown, TN; Tim Wittner and Deb, Colorado Springs, CO; Sharon Smith and Charley, South Coffeyville, OK; Johnna Smith and Mike, Oologah, OK; Donna Ernest and Steve, Westphalia, KS; and Chris Wittner and Debbie, Dewey, OK. Joanne is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. A Memorial service celebrating Joanne's life will be on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 10;00 a.m. at the First Church of God, 2010 West 5th St., Coffeyville, KS. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in remembrance of Joanne to the American Red Cross; contributions may be left with the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
