Obituary of Odessa (Broadway) Thompson Starr

Odessa Broadway Thompson Starr, 73, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away on January 27, 2022, after a brief battle with dementia that accelerated her deteriorating health. She was born on January 9, 1949, in Marked Tree, Arkansas to Ophelia Johnson Doss and George Broadway. She attended public school in Hughes, Arkansas. She confessed a hope in Jesus Christ and was baptized at the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Osceola, Arkansas. Her maternal sojourn began with the birth of daughter Ronda Stokes Davis. In 1970, Odessa met and married Hubert Thompson, Sr. To this union, three children were born, James Thompson, Wendy Thompson McCreary, and Hubert Thompson, Jr. before the untimely death of Hubert, Sr. She also was blessed to give birth to Tanisha Thompson and Sasha Thompson. In 1992, Odessa met and married Dorse E. Starr, who also preceded her in death. To this union, no children were born. Odessa was also predeceased by her parents, four sisters, Bessie Woodson, Georgia Broadway, Elizabeth Broadway, and Mamie Rollen; three brothers, Charlie Doss, Virgle Broadway, and Roger Robinson; one daughter, Ronda Davis; one son, James Thompson; one grandchild, Odell McCreary; and two great-grandchildren, Jawaun Thompson, Jr. and Darrel McCreary, Jr. She is survived by her siblings, Martha Moore of Kyle, Texas, Nathan Broadway and Shirley Dunomes of Aurora, Colorado, Carolyn (Robert) Thompson of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Johnny Woods and Anita (Clyde) Hudnall of Coffeyville, Estella (Anthony) Hall, Anthony Broadway, and Maurice (Cassandra) Broadway of Benton Harbor, Michigan; Tasha Broadway and Eric (Linda) Broadway of Hughes, Arkansas; Tana Lanie House, Gregory House, Jimmy Jermain (Jessica) House, and Willie Bert House of Elkhart, Indiana; George (Dorothy) Broadway of West Memphis, Arkansas; Ulysses Broadway of Memphis, Tennessee; Joe (Denice) Broadway of Detroit, Michigan; and Diane Jones of Wichita, Kansas; her daughter Wendy McCreary and son Hubert E. (Cheryl) Thompson both of Coffeyville; and daughters Tanisha Thompson and Sasha Thompson both of Wichita with special companions Jacob Henderson and Kevin Harris. She also leaves to cherish her memory 25 grandchildren; 19 plus great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; and other extended family members and friends. Home Going Services will be held on Friday, February 4, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at the St Johns Church of Faith in Coffeyville, Kansas. Pastor Purely Wilson will officiate. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Coffeyville. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 3, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.
