Sedan - Bernice L. Slaughter, age 87, of Elgin, Kansas passed away Thursday, December 14, 2006 at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan, Kansas. She was born July 4, 1919 in Marion, Kansas to Peter A. and Ameta Pearl (Ford) Cornelsen. Growing up, she attended Chautauqua County rural schools. She graduated from the Sedan High School. On April 22, 1943 married James Franklin "Pete" Slaughter in Chautauqua County. After their marriage, they lived in many different places, including Leon, Severy, and Iola. They moved to Elgin in 1963. Mr. Slaughter preceded her in death in June of 1994. She was employed as a C.N.A. at Sedan City Hospital for many years. She attended the Baptist Church. Survivors include one son, Jimmy Slaughter and his wife Opal, of Pratt, Kansas; two daughters, Louise Buck of Sedan and Ilene Kingsley and her husband Eddie of Elgin, Kansas; eleven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband "Pete", three brothers, six sisters, one great-grandson and one son-in-law. Family and friends may call from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, December 17, 2006 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 18, 2006 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan, with Earl Tresner officiating. Interment will follow at the Elgin Cemetery in Elgin, Kansas. The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Pleasant Valley Manor \ Activity Fund and these remembrances may be left with the funeral home.
