Coffeyville - Betty Louise Moore, nee Wakeman, 83, longtime Caney resident passed away Thursday, September 29, 2011 at Union, Missouri. Betty was born October 2, 1927 at Wathena, KS to Norris and Gladys Wakeman. She grew up on a Doniphan County farm, graduating from Wathena High School as salutatorian in 1945. She then attended nursing school at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, receiving her Register Nurses diploma in 1948. For the next two years she worked as a psychiatric nurse at the Winter V.A. Hospital in Topeka. She was united in marriage to Robert Foster Moore on August 20, 1950, and worked as a nurse at the Student Health Center at Kansas State University while her husband was completing his pre-med education. She then continued nursing at K.U. Medical Center while Bob went through medical school. During this time she somehow managed to bear four children. The Moore's spent two years in Texas while Bob served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force, following which they located to Caney, Kansas where they lived from 1960 to 2011. Betty was a very active woman, respected and loved by virtually everybody who knew her. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Sigourynean Club, the D.A.R., Order of Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, University of Kansas Alumni Association, Chancellor's Club, and the Girl Scouts of America. She served eight years on the State Board of Pharmacy, and similar term on the Board of Trustees of the Coffeyville Community College. She was a lifelong Republican, serving her party as County Chairman and State Delegate at various times. She helped inaugurate the Caney Ambassadors' Organization and worked in that group for many years. She also served as head of the Meadowlark Girl Scouts Council and spent many summers as Girl Scout camp nurse in Kansas and Oklahoma. Betty wished to express a fond farewell and thank you to all her many friends, but especially to the girls in her bridge clubs, and to her golfing buddies at Coffeyville Country Club and Caney Golf Club. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Robert Moore of the home; four children, Dr. Steven Moore and wife Cristina of Pebble Beach, California, Dr. Curtis Moore and wife Melissa of DeSota, Kansas, Nancy Moore of Union, Missouri, and Suzanne Curnutte and husband Edward of Union, Missouri. In addition she leaves fourteen beautiful grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, William, Charles, Gregg, and Gordon Wakeman. A Service Celebrating Betty's life will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 3, 2011 at the Caney United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Clemence officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery in Caney, Kansas. Friends may call on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville, KS. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Caney United Methodist Church in Caney, KS. The family suggests memorials to the Caney Community Center; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
