Coffeyville - Vernon Wilson, 81, of Monkey Island, OK formerly of Coffeyville, passed away Monday, at Integris Grove General Hospital in Grove, OK. He was born November 12, 1929 at Coffeyville to David Sylvester and Myrtle Ethel (Lovelace) Wilson. He grew up and attended near Coffeyville, and attended Tyro Grade School, and Ringo School near Tyro. He also graduated from the Beery School of Horsemanship in May 1945. On July 11, 1947 he married Delores Meek at Marshfield, MO. Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville, where Vernon was a manager for Martin Concrete and later Southern Industries for 43 years, retiring in 1992. In 1993 they moved to Monkey Island, OK and made their home at Grand Lake. Vernon was a member of Keystone Masonic Lodge #102 A.F. & A.M. in Coffeyville, Scottish Rite in Fort Scott, Mirza Temple in Pittsburg, and was a charter member of the Shriners' Southeast Kansas Hillbillies. For many years Vernon was an avid coon hunter and loved fishing and spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife, Delores of the home; two sons, David Wilson and wife RoseMerida of Carmichael, CA, and Timothy Wilson and wife Janie of McCune, KS; one daughter, Yvonne Volk and husband Dan of Locust Grove, OK; one brother, Raymond Wilson of South Coffeyville, OK; one sister Viola Avery of Caney; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, and four sisters. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at the First Southern Baptist Church in Coffeyville with his nephew, Rev. Harol Wright officiating. Burial will be in Robbins Cemetery west of Coffeyville, with Masonic Rites conducted by Keystone Masonic Lodge #102 A.F. & A.M. The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 17th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. Friends may also call on Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Shriners Hospital for Children, or Hospital Dads; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
