Sedan - Joe Neal Stephens, age 75, of Cedar Vale, Kansas (formerly of Havana) passed away Sunday, May 29, 2011 at the Coffeyville Regional Medical Center in Coffeyville, Kansas. He was born January 10, 1936 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Charles and Ruth (Clark) Stephens. Joe was raised by his grandparents Leonard and Gracie Clark. He was raised and educated in Tulsa, graduating from Will Rogers High School and attended Tulsa University, where he studied drafting. Joe worked as an industrial painter for Kimery Painting Inc. He retired in September 2002. Joe loved to fish and was an avid fisherman winning several events. He loved spending time with his granddaughter, Emma Speer, riding the golf cart, teaching her to fish, and watching her mud race and play baseball. He also loved the cookies she made for him. On September 18, 1998, Joe married Sharon "Sandy" Ann Defenbaugh in Miami, Oklahoma. They made their home in Tulsa, until moving to Havana, Kansas in 2005. In 2009, due to his health, Joe and Sandy moved to Cedar Vale, Kansas to be closer to their daughter, Freda Speer. Joe is survived by his wife, Sandy, of the home; one brother, Timmy Sayon of Hillsboro, North Carolina; three daughters, Peggy Hutchinson of Owensboro, Kentucky, Paula Richie of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Keli Michener of Catoosa, Oklahoma; six stepchildren, Freda Speer and Brenda Myers of Cedar Vale, Kansas, John Walker of Moline, Kansas, Mitzi Ames of Inola, Oklahoma, Cheryl Sillman of Oologah, Oklahoma, and Kim Marrs of Yulee, Florida; twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Joe is preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, infant half sisters, Nancy and Phyllis Sayon, and great-grandson Nathan Stone. Family and friends may call on Thursday, June 2, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan. Services will be held Friday, June 3, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Havana United Methodist Church in Havana, Kansas with Reverend Mark Davis of the Cedar Vale First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Havana Cemetery. The family has suggested a memorial to the Veteran's Memorial Park in Havana and those remembrances can be sent to the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N.
