Chester D. Reed, age 95, of Sedan, Kansas passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan.
He was born April 3, 1912 south of Peru, Kansas to Chester Arthur and Leona (Kirkendall) Reed. He attended Davis Creek country school east of Peru and graduated from Peru High School in 1931. He later attended Pittsburg State University for one year, then he returned to the Peru area where he farmed and ranched until he retired in 1993 and moved to Sedan. He married Nova M. Lamb on February 21, 1934 in Independence, Kansas.
On February 21, 2008 they would have been married 74 years. She survives at the home in Sedan.
He served on the Peru School Board for several years. He was founding member of the Twin Caney Watershed board, where he served as director.
He was a member of the Peru United Methodist Church and the Chautauqua County Farm Bureau.
He is survived by his wife, Nova Reed of Sedan, Ks; two sons, Charles Arthur Reed of Sedan, Kansas and Ronald "Joe" Reed of Peru, Kansas; one brother, Ward Reed of Jacksonville, Florida; one sister, Marjorie Jaques of Nashville, Arkansas; 5 grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and 1 great- great -granddaughter. Numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Hubert and Doyle and one sister Martha.
Family and friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 4, 2008 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 5, 2008 at Peru United Methodist Church in Peru, Kansas with Earl Tresner officiating. Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Niotaze, Kansas.
The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Peru Alumni Scholarship Fund and these remembrances may be left in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas Street, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
