Coffeyville - Manuel R. Serrato Meza, 88, of Coffeyville, passed away Tuesday, January 5, 2009 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. He was born October 12, 1921 at El Paso, Texas to Doroteo and Maria (Ruiz) Serrato. When he was young his family moved to Independence where he grew up and attended school. Mr. Meza was a proud veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army from August 1942 until receiving his discharge in September 1945. His combat duty included the Rome-Arno, Central Europe, Southern France and Rhineland Campaigns On July 24, 1948 he married Anita Candelas at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Independence. Following their marriage they made their home in Independence where he worked as a concrete contractor for A.G. Sherwood Construction Co. In 1969 they moved to Coffeyville where he was employed at Morrow Foundry until retiring in 1986. Mrs. Meza preceded him in death on November 22, 2002. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1022. Survivors include two daughters, Dolores Parker and husband Virgil of Coffeyville, and Jessie Barrett and husband Justin of Independence; half brother, Tony Meza and wife Pam of Union City, CA; half sister, Margaret Hernandez and husband Louis of Independence; eleven grandchildren, Deanna (Chad) Vulgamore of Wichita, Vincent Parker of Kansas City, KS, Judibeth (Drue) Banzet of Coffeyville, James Parker of Wichita, Rachel Parker of Wichita, Richard (Ashley) Parker of Coffeyville, Michael Parker of Pittsburg, Marci (Tim) Lynch of Topeka, Dustin Meza of Kansas City, KS, Adrienne (Cody) Jones, and Bob Austin both of Independence; twelve great-grandchildren, two nephews, Paul (Sylvia) Meza, of Anaheim, CA, and Frank (Kaycia) Meza of Independence; and one niece, Rebecca Ramirez of Independence, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Aurelio Meza and Lupe Meza; one son, Richard Meza; and one great-grandson, Reid Banzet. A Rosary Service will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 9, 2010, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Coffeyville, with Mass of Christian Burial immediately following. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Independence, with military honors conducted by Elliott-Funston-White V.F.W. Post #1022 and American Legion Post #20.
