Dorothy Irene Kennedy, 83, of Sedan, Kansas passed away Sunday, December 29, 2013 at the Sedan City Hospital in Sedan.
She was born August 18, 1930 in Winfield, Kansas to Ralph Darrell Snyder and Omeda Violet (Boatman) Snyder. Irene grew up in Winfield and attended school through Junior High before graduating from Cedar Vale High School in Cedar Vale, Kansas. After high school she attended Southwestern College.
On September 3, 1950 she married Henry Eugene "Gene" Kennedy in Cedar Vale, Kansas. Irene worked for the Selective Service System for five years until the draft ended. She was also co-owner of Kennedy Leather Goods for over twenty five years. She and Gene were later divorced. She also worked for The Chautauqua County Engineers Office as an office manager for over sixteen years until her retirement in 1999.
Irene was a member of the Sedan First United Methodist Church, Sedan Business Women, Sedan BPW/SBW past President; Sedan Senior Citizens, and the Starting Over card and social club of Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
Survivors include; two sons, Monte E. Kennedy and wife Chris of Yukon, Oklahoma and Robert Lee "Bob" Kennedy and wife Sally of Sedan, Kansas; one daughter, Carol Ann Kennedy of Huntington Beach, California; two brothers, Keith Snyder and wife Rosemary of Bastrap, Texas and Paul Snyder and wife Myrna of Bellevue, Nebraska; one sister, Jean Marie Barger of Ponca City, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Irene was preceded in death by one daughter Janet Sue Kennedy, two brothers, Lloyd Snyder and Blaine Snyder and one sister Susan Snyder. .
Services will be held Friday, January 3, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Sedan, Kansas with Reverend Jerry Bever officiating. Burial will follow at the Cedar Creek Cemetery, northwest of Cedar Vale, Kansas.
Friends may call on Thursday, January 2, 2013 from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.
The family has suggested memorials to the First United Methodist Church of Sedan or the Sedan Senior Citizen Center and those may be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
