James Richard Watson, age 71, of rural Niotaze, Kansas passed away Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Independence, Kansas.
He was born April 9, 1938 in rural Havana, Kansas to James A. and Rosa A. (Atkinson) Watson. He attended and graduated from Wayside High School in Wayside, Kansas. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served until he was later honorably discharged. He worked as a pipefitter for BTJ Steamfitter Local #441 in Wichita, Kansas for forty years until his retirement. He was a longtime Chautauqua and Montgomery County resident.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #1022 in Coffeyville, Kansas and also was a member of the Pipefitters Union #441 in Wichita, Kansas. He also loved to hunt and fish.
He is survived by his companion; Marie Young of Caney, Kansas; one son, James Darren Young of Caney, Kansas; one daughter, Kim Hoag of Waverly, Kansas; three brothers, Mark C. Watson of Sedan, Kansas, John Watson of Hays, Kansas, and Bill D. Watson of Eureka, Kansas; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the El Cado Cemetery in rural Niotaze, Kansas with Mike Morris of the First Assembly of God Church in Caney officiating.
The family has requested no visitation and the casket will be closed.
In lieu of flowers the family has suggested memorials to the First Assembly of God Church Building Fund in Caney and can be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
