Coffeyville - Alfred Eugene "Gene" Hobbs, 70, of Coffeyville passed away Sunday, June 7, 2009 at the Continuous Care Center of Bartlesville, from injuries received in an automobile accident on May 9, 2009. He was born November 12, 1938 in Coffeyville to Alfred Ernest and Grace Marguerite (Knisley) Hobbs. Gene grew up and attended school in Coffeyville graduating from Field Kindley High School in 1957. Following high school he attended welding school at Pittsburg. For many years Gene was a pipeline welder in later years he was an underground utilities contractor. In his free time he enjoyed restoring classic cars. On October 9, 2004 he married Anna Marie Mummert in Coffeyville. Following their marriage they continued to make their home in Coffeyville. Gene was a member of the Tyro Christian Church, accepting Christ on April 30. He was also an active member of Pipeliners Union Local #798 in Tulsa, National Street Rod Association and the Democratic Party. Survivors include his wife, Anna Marie Hobbs of the home; one son, Andy Hobbs and wife Jacque of Coffeyville; three daughters, Sue Relph and special friend Phil Zimmerman, Debra Hobbs, and Gena Schockey and husband Kevin all of Coffeyville; one step-daughter, Kelli Hannis of Tyler, TX; one sister, Linda Hannigan of Coffeyville; seven grandchildren, Jessica Hobbs, Drew Hobbs, Lexi Hobbs, Eric Relph, Emily Relph, Miranda Schockey and Kaley Schockey; four step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, Ethan Relph, Gracie Relph, Alli Relph, and Devon Saldana. Services will be at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2009 in the Tyro Christian Church with David Bycroft, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Coffeyville. Friends may call on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the Gene Hobbs Memorial Scholarship Fund for Welding and Auto Body at CCC Technical Campus or the Tyro Christian Church; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
