Earl D. "Mouse" Howard, 84, of Coffeyville passed away Monday, June 1, 2009 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.
He was born August 28, 1924 at Coffeyville to Earl Marion and Ellen Emma (Calvert) Howard. He grew up in Coffeyville and attended West Coffeyville Elementary School and graduated from Field Kindley High School in 1941. After high school he attended and graduated from Coffeyville Junior College where he played guard on the Red Raven Football Team for two years. Mouse was inducted into the Coffeyville Community College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.
In January 1946 he joined the U.S. Army serving as an x-ray technician. After receiving as honorable discharge in April 1947 he returned to Coffeyville and a job with Union Gas Company where he started working during his first year of college. Mouse was employed with Union Gas and Crescent Oil Companies for more than 60 years. He stayed busy with overseeing over 60 JumpStart Convenience Stores for Crescent Oil.
On December 11, 1964 he married Leona "Tony" (George) Gowen. She preceded him in death on August 25, 1999.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he served on several committees. and active member of the Coffeyville Chamber of Commerce, a Chamber Ambassador, Coffeyville Pride, American Legion Post #20, Coffeyville Community College Committee, and numerous civic organizations.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Temple and husband Joe of Coffeyville; one son, Dick Gowen and wife Shirley of Coffeyville; five grandchildren, Joseph Temple, Chris Temple and Staci Temple; Robin Gowen and Julie Gowen; and one great-grandson, Tanner Sandusky.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 4, 2009 in the Trinity United Methodist Church with Reverend Lee Passwater officiating. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
