Leland Phillips, 82, of Coffeyville passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at his home after a long illness.
He was born August 1, 1926, in Coffeyville to Sam and Rose (Schwartz) Phillips. He grew up and attended school in Coffeyville graduating from Field Kindley High School.
Following graduation he joined the U.S. Navy in June of 1944 serving during World War II aboard the USS Converse until receiving his honorable discharge in 1946. After his discharge he attended Tulsa University. Following his education he joined his father Sam, in the family business Phillips Steel and Metal, working for many years with his brother Larry.
In 1953, he married Greta Gassner, they were later divorced.
On December 28, 1980, Leland married Vicki Shute in Coffeyville.
Leland was active in the Coffeyville Jr. Chamber of Commerce and was also instrumental in establishing the first kids wrestling club in Coffeyville. He was a member of the V.F.W. and an active member of the USS Converse reunion committee. He also served as President of his high school reunion committee for several years. Leland enjoyed playing golf with his friends for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Vicki of the home; his daughter, Barbara Nelson and husband Rod, of Coffeyville; two sons, Barry Phillips and wife Carol of Coffeyville, and Matthew Phillips of Boise, Idaho; two step-sons, Jack Anderson and Austin Shute both of Fresno, CA; one brother, Larry Phillips and wife Carol of Coffeyville; and two grandsons, Nick and Nash Nelson. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and sister-in-law, Morton and Effie Phillips; and one step-son, Michael F. Anderson.
Following cremation, private family inurnment will take place.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 9, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Veterans Patio in Fairview Cemetery, with Rev. Jerry Deffenbaugh officiating. Military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post #1022 and American Legion Post #20 of Coffeyville.
Friends may sign the register book on Thursday, May 7, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday, May 8, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.
