Coffeyville - Edward Jackson "Jack" Shanahan, 83, retired Dentist of Coffeyville, passed away Monday evening, February 9, 2009 at his home.
He was born July 21, 1925 at Cushing, OK to Timothy W. and Marie J. (Jackson) Shanahan. When he was young the family moved to Coffeyville where he attended school graduating from Field Kindley High School in 1943.
Following high school he joined the U.S. Army serving with the 112th Infantry Division Company C during the Battle of the Bulge. Following his discharge he returned to Coffeyville where he continued his education at Coffeyville Junior College before transferring to the University of Missouri Kansas City Dental College. After graduating from Dental school in 1951 he practiced in Fredonia for a short time before returning to Coffeyville where he practiced for 35 years retiring in 1986.
On November 12, 1961 he married Mary Dell Barker at Coffeyville. Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville. His wife preceded him in death on September 12, 1986.
Jack was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as Deacon, Elder, and Trustee, he was named Elder Emeritus in 2007. He was a member of the American Dental Association, the Kansas Dental Association of which he was a Past President, a former member of the U.S.D. #445 Board of Education, and the Lions Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Dell Marie Shanahan-Swearer and her husband John of Hutchinson, and Eileen Mary Shanahan-Thornburg and her husband Ron of Oklahoma City, OK; and two grandchildren, Jackson Brooks Swearer and Sarah Marie Swearer both of Hutchinson.
Memorial Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 12, 2009 in the First Presbyterian Church in Coffeyville. Private inurnment will take place in Fairview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church and the Coffeyville Public Library Audio Book Fund; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 N. Cline Rd., Coffeyville, KS 67337
Friends may sign the register book on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
