Charles W. Taylor, 88, of Edna, KS, passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at the Labette County Medical Center in Parsons.
He was born November 4, 1920 at Oswego, KS to Charles Henry and Minnie (Massa) Taylor. He grew up and attended school in Edna graduating from Edna High School. Following high school he attended Kansas State Teachers College now Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg before joining the U.S. Army Air Corp serving during World War II. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army Air Corp he returned to the Edna area.
On September 10, 1950 he married Barbara Sammetinger at the Elm Christian Church east of Edna. Following their marriage they made their home in Edna where Charles was Postmaster at the Edna Post Office. He retired in 1990 after 40 years of service.
Charles was active in the Edna community where he was a longtime member of the Elm Christian Church where he served as an Elder and was also Choir Director for many years. He was a longtime member and past Master of the Edna Masonic Lodge, patron at Cunningham Chapter Order of Eastern Star, a charter member of the Edna Volunteer Fire Department, past State President of the National Postmasters League, lifetime member of the American Legion, former member of the Edna Lions Club, and Simfonia Music Fraternity.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara of the home; one daughter Jo Foster and husband Mark of Edna; and two grandchildren, Sierra Foster and Colten Foster both of Edna. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Walter Lee Taylor and Mary Jane McRae.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 29, 2008 in the Elm Christian Church east of Edna, KS. Burial will be in the North Edna Cemetery with military honors conducted by V.F.W. Post #1022 and American Legion Post #20 of Coffeyville.
Friends may call on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to the Elm Christian Church or the Edna Volunteer Fire Department; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, Kansas 67337.
