Roy J. Stephens, 77, of Caney went to be with the Lord on December 6, 2008 at St. John's Medical Center in Tulsa, OK.
He was born January 21, 1931 in Caney to George and Minnie (Ashbrook) Stephens. He grew up and attended school in Caney, graduating from Caney High School in 1951. Following high school Roy joined the U.S. Navy serving during the Korean War from 1951 to 1954. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy he returned to Caney.
On November 12, 1954 he married Edna Riley at Caney. Following their marriage they made their home in the Caney area. Roy worked as a mail carrier in Caney for several years and also worked for the City of Caney for 14 years. Roy and Edna later owned and operated the Red Maple Restaurant in Caney.
Roy was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Caney, where he served as a Deacon he also was a member of the V.F.W Post in Caney.
Survivors include his wife, Edna of the home; one son, Darrell Stephens and wife Sue of Olpe, KS; two daughters, Donna Harriman and husband Glen of Whittleyville, TN, and Debra Fritz and husband Eric of Circleville, KS; one sister, Violet Loffer of Coffeyville, KS; ten grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Bud Stephens and Glenn Stephens; and two sisters, Daisy Stephens, and Lorraine Griffin.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 11, 2008 in the First Southern Baptist Church in Caney, with Rev. Josh Eaton and Rev. Andy Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in the El Cado Cemetery south of Peru, KS.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to the Deacons Fund at the First Southern Baptist Church and the Wednesday night Teenage Fellowship group; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
