Doreatha L. Moon, 97, of Coffeyville passed away Saturday, November 29, 2008 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.
She was born July 9, 1911 in Nowata County, Oklahoma to Albert J. and Emma Sophia (Mohr) Collins. She grew up in Nowata County attending school in South Coffeyville and Delaware.
In 1929 she married Elmer McAfee. He preceded her in death in 1930.
In 1935 she married Elmer Wayne Moon. Following their marriage they lived in the Coffeyville area where they operated a Dairy Farm. In 1942 they moved to San Pedro, California where Mr. Moon worked in the ship yards during WW II. In 1946 they moved to Chanute, KS where they owned and operated the New Castle Cafe. In 1957 the returned to Coffeyville where they operated the New Castle Cafe located in the Condon Bank Building on the Plaza until 1972. Mr. Moon preceded her in death in 1976. Following her husband's death she worked at Tal's Drive in Theatre where she was known for cooking her Moon Burger. She retired from Tal's when it closed after working there for 20 years
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Coffeyville, , Keystone Sunday School Class, and was active in the Quilters Group at the First United Church, Westside Workers, and Home Extension Club, she was also an active in the Salvation Army Auxiliary and Red Cross. Doreatha enjoyed time spent with her family, quilting, fishing and gardening.
Survivors include three daughters, Margie (McAfee) Montgomery-Hull of Lawrence, Joyce Pridgeon of Grove, OK, and Jewel Hunt of Coffeyville; two sons, Elmer Wayne Moon, Jr. of Coffeyville, and Edward Moon of Wichita; two brothers, Daniel Collins of Marysville, WA, and Wilder "Toby" Collins of McKinney, TX; one sister, Kathaleen Hand of Tulsa, OK; 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, one daughter, Juanita Lucille Moon in 1963; three brothers, Ivan Collins, Roland Collins, and Albert Collins, and six sisters, Louise Harding, Fairy Ferguson, Pearl McKellips, Phyllis Crossman, and Shirley Beck and Clarabelle Keleher
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 4, 2008 in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. John Collins officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Coffeyville.
The family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.
