Terry Gene Monroe, age 86, of rural Elk City, Kansas passed away Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at the Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
He was born March 30, 1922 in Madill, Oklahoma to A.M. and Annie T. (Jaegers) Monroe. He graduated from Madill, Oklahoma. He attended college at Oklahoma A & M where he played football and played in the Sugar Bowl in 1946. He then transferred to the University of Kansas where he played football and played in the Orange Bowl in 1948 with his brother. He later transferred back to Oklahoma A & M, graduating from there in 1949. After graduation, he worked at the Crooked Oak High School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma as the high school principal and football coach for 4 years. He also worked for Sargent Pipe and Supply in Seminole, Oklahoma. He purchased the farm in rural Elk City in 1960 and from 1960 to 1980 he worked at Clay Equipment. After his retirement in 1980 he worked as a Farmer and Rancher on the family farm.
He served in the United States Air Force. He married Lela Mae (Hobbs) Martz in Sapulpa, Oklahoma on March 27, 1953. She preceded him in death on August 14, 2003.
He was one of eleven children and enjoyed his family, football and work.
He is survived by one son, David Monroe and wife Debbie of rural Elk City, Kansas; one step-daughter, Marty (Martz) Persinger of Longton, Kansas and one sister, Beth Farquar of Atlanta, Georgia; six grandchildren; Jerrod Monroe and Nikki Young, Dallas Quinton and Mike Wadleigh, Susie Fish and Tammie Peel; 5 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lela Mae, one son, Terry Gene Monroe II, five brothers and four sisters.
Cremation has taken place and friends may sign the register book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday and Friday, October 23 and 24, 2008 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.
A Memorial Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 25, 2008 at the Hale Cemetery in rural Elk City, Kansas with Jim Beeson and Reverend Jerry Bever officiating.
