Coffeyville - William Walter "Bill" Currier, 80, of Coffeyville passed away Sunday, November 24, 2013, at his home. He was born December 1, 1932, at Dodge City, KS, to William Frenton and Gladys (Markley) Currier. Bill grew up and received his education in Coffeyville, graduating from Field Kindley High School in 1951. Bill continued his education at Coffeyville Community College, received a Bachelor of Science degree from Pittsburg State University in 1954, and a Master's Degree from Pittsburg State University in 1981. On June 30, 1951, he married Ethel Ann Chaney at the United Brethren Church in Coffeyville. Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville where Bill worked at Parkersburg Rig and Reel and Kansas Wholesale Grocery while attending Coffeyville Junior College, after graduating they moved to Pittsburg where Bill worked while attending Pittsburg State University. After graduating from Pittsburg State, they moved to Neodesha where Bill taught 4th Grade, until returning to Coffeyville where he taught Physical Education at Edgewood School, 7th Grade Kansas History at McKinley School and was a Guidance Counselor at Roosevelt Junior High until retiring in 1995 after teaching for 39 years. During his years in the Coffeyville schools Bill also coached Girls Basketball and Tennis. Bill was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, life member of NEA, and a member of KNEA, Lions Club, CRMC Auxiliary receiving their volunteer of the year award. He enjoyed playing golf, and attending Golden Tornado and Red Raven sporting events. Survivors include his wife, Ethel of the home; one daughter, Kathy Henderson and husband Gary of Coffeyville; one granddaughter, Heather Lowrance and husband Jeff of Auburn, NE; two great-grandsons, Max Lowrance and Wyatt Lowrance both of Auburn, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Clifford "Cliff" Currier; one son, William Robert "Bill" Currier on March 10, 2012; and one daughter, Ann Elizabeth Currier on September 23, 2012. Following Bill's wishes cremation has taken place. A graveside memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Fairview Cemetery with Father Ben Nguyen officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 30, 2013 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family suggests memorials to the Cliff and Bill Currier Memorial Scholarship Fund at Coffeyville Community College; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
