Coffeyville - Edith May Sprague, age 96, former longtime Caney resident, passed away Saturday, October 18 at the Overland Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Overland Park, KS.
Edith was born June 23, 1912 on a farm near Howard to Fred Eugene and Ethel Pearl (Small) Royse. In 1913, she moved with her family to Oklahoma where she attended rural schools. In December 1924 the family returned to Kansas and made their home near Elk Falls until 1927 when they moved to Oak Valley near Longton. She returned to Elk Falls and graduated from Elk Falls High School in 1932.
On February 28, 1936, she married William Lloyd Sprague in Fredonia, KS. To this union was born one son, William Roy and one daughter, Kathie Beth. The made their home in Caney and Sedan for many years. Edith has resided in the Kansas City area since 2001.
Survivors include her son, Bill and his wife Rose Marie of Louisburg, KS and daughter, Kathie Musgrave of Kansas City, MO; granddaughters, Pam White of Basehor, KS, Sandra Alderman of Pottsville, PA, and Kristine Branson of Augusta, GA; grandsons, Brad Sprague of Shawnee, KS, and Scott Musgrave of Raymore, MO; and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lloyd; three brothers, George Royse, Hugh Royse, and Darrell Royse; one sister, Lois Harris; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at the Caney United Methodist Church with Rev. Angela DeFisher officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Falls Cemetery at Elk Falls, KS.
Friends may call on Tuesday, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Caney United Methodist Church; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
