Clinton J. "J.C." Young, 79, of Caney, passed away Thursday, October 2, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, OK.
He was born March 30, 1929, at Caney to Redge C. and Hester Pearl (Vantassel) Young. He grew up at attended school in Caney graduating from Caney High School in 1949. While in high school he was a member of the Bullpup Basketball team.
On November 6, 1950 he married Naomi Rogers at Cedar Vale, Kansas. Following their marriage they made their home in Caney until March 1952 when J.C. joined the U.S. Air Force. While in the Air Force they lived in Curlew, Washington where was stationed. While there J.C. played basketball and his team won the Armed Forces Division Championship. Following his honorable discharge in March 1957 they returned to Kansas and lived in Wichita while J.C. studied to become an Optician. After completing school they returned to Caney where he started Magic Circle Laboratory making Contact Lenses in 1959. He later owned and operated Contact Lense Specialists retiring in 1998.
J.C. was a member of the Tyro Christian Church, a former Trustee at his church. He was a member of the Contact Lense Society of America, the Caney Chamber of Commerce, the Caney Golf Club, a former member of the Caney Valley Recreation Board, Caney Jaycee's, and Caney City Council. J.C. was an avid Caney Valley Bullpup fan, helping with the chains at home football games for many years, and missed very few football and basketball games.
Survivors include his wife, Naomi of the home; his children, Ken and Barbara Young of Jefferson, KS, Brenda and Mike Frye of Wayside, KS, Jeannette and Anthony Bellmyer of Caney, and David and Patty Young of Caney; one sister, Julia Melton and husband Buck of Cedar Vale, KS; nine grandchildren, Michaele Jabben, Stacie Rose, Dusty Young, Preston Bellmyer, Jennifer Bellmyer, Tracie Jabben, Travis Young, Michael Pearson and Robin Pearson; and eight great-grandchildren, John Michael Jabben, Kannon Young, Jake Young, Tanner Rose, Dakota Rose, Jade Jabben, Ian Pearson and Seth Pearson. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Corey Young.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2008 in the Tyro Christian Church in Tyro with David Bycroft officiating. Burial will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery in Caney with military honors conducted by the U.S. Air Force, McConnell Air Force Base, Wichita, KS.
Friends may call on Monday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Tyro Christian Church in Tyro. The family will receive friends during this time.
The family suggests memorials to the Tyro Christian Church and the Caney Valley Bullpup Booster Club; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Rd., Coffeyville, KS 67337.
