Caney -
Bob George McDaniel, 76, of Caney, passed away Thursday morning August 21, 2008 at Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, OK.
He was born September 4, 1931 at Sharon, Kansas to Ernest Charles and Flora (Taylor) McDaniel. He grew up and attended school in Sharon graduating from Sharon High School. He was a star center on his high school basketball team, which was runner-up at the State Basketball Tournament in 1948. Following high school he attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Oklahoma.
He was a drafted into the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War stationed at Landstuhl Military Hospital in Germany with the 34th General Hospital Unit. Following his discharge in 1953 he returned to the Sharon, KS area.
On May 12, 1951 he married Joyce Basinger at Sharon. Following his discharge they moved to Alva, OK where Bob worked for Farmers Co-op until November 1954 when they moved to Shattuck, OK, where they purchased their first locker and processing plant which they operated for 13 years. During this time they also operated a Dairy Kreem for 6 months. This was just long enough for them to decide they did not want to spend the rest of their life doing this. They sold their plant and Dairy Kreem in the fall of 1967. They moved to Caney in October 1967 when they purchased the Caney Food Bank. After Bob has triple by-pass surgery in 1977 he continued to work in the processing plant until they sold it in 1980. In 1981 the opened a gift shop, hey had gone to jewelry design school and began designing jewelry and selling fine jewelry in the store. In 1983 they moved their gift store to the highway location (4th and McGee) and a year later they purchased Caney Floral and combined it with their gift shop. They operated at this location until 1995 when they moved to their current location on East 3rd St. Bob was a talented floral and jewelry designer.
Bob's hobby was raising cattle. He especially enjoyed Black Angus. He was always trying to develop "The" best meat for eating enjoyment. He was lifetime member of the American Angus Association. He also enjoyed the Limousine, Braunwich and Charolais breeds. He was an active promoter of the FFA and 4-H, Honorary State Farmer with the FFA Association. He learned it was easier to work cattle with Border Collies than horses and this led to another hobby. His first registered Border Collie was Nanci. She placed second in a stock dog trial in Sedan. He decided his dog training was O.K. so this led to many more border collies. He discovered about two years ago that a dog lover could also be a cat lover when Taz came to join the household.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Sharon. He became an avid supporter of the library through his wife's love of the library.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce of the home; three sons, Mark and his wife Terri of Caney, Marshall and his wife Carol of Dewey, OK, and Mike McDaniel of Dewey, OK; one brother, Virgil of Enid, OK; ten grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
