Sedan - Harry Franklin Kerr, age 84, of Sedan, Kansas passed away Friday, August 8, 2008 at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan, Kansas. He was born September 28, 1923 in Manter, Kansas to Harvey Edmund and Effie Vera (Mann) Kerr. He lived there until 1937 until returning to Greenwood County. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1942. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II in Okinawa and Japan from February 12, 1944 until his honorable discharge on June 21, 1946. On September 25, 1945 in Eureka, Kansas he married Dorothy Walker of Sedan. He returned to farming in Greenwood County. In 1958, he went to work in the oil patch. In 1966, he and the family moved to Sedan, Kansas. He welded for Archie McCunningham until he leased the Kerr McGee Station, which he ran from 1967 to 1976. He built and ran his own pulling unit for two years. He purchased the laundromat and managed it for two years. He returned to oil field work and pumped wells until he retired. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Kerr of the home in Sedan; one son, Stanley E. Kerr of Stillwater, Oklahoma; two daughters, Patricia (Kerr) Cox of Arkansas City, Kansas and Ruby (Kerr) Fisher of Sedan, Kansas; four grandchildren, Ben Cox, Cassandra Shaw, Jennifer Kerr and Brandon Kerr and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, four brothers and two nephews. Cremation has taken place and friends may sign the register book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday, August 12 and 13, 2008 and from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, August 14, 2008 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 15, 2008 at the Greenwood Cemetery Shelter House in Sedan, Kansas with Hospice Chaplain Mike Graham officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by the United States Marine Corps. Honor Guard. Lunch will be served at the local VFW following the service. The family has suggested memorial contributions to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice or Sedan Youth Fun Fish Clinic and these remembrances may be left in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
