Oma Ethel Johnson, 94, of Coffeyville passed away Monday, July 28, 2014 at Asbury Village in Coffeyville. She was born November 26, 1919, at White City, TX to Hiram Milton and Eula Mae (Burney) Horton. Ethel grew up and attended school in south Texas. She was a veteran of World War II serving as a Sgt. in the Women's Army Corp from 1943 to 1945. In 1946 she married Virgil Ira Johnson at Norman, OK. Following their marriage they made their home in Oklahoma. Ethel returned to school receiving a Bachelor Degree in Education from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, OK, and began her career as a teacher. She later returned to school and received a Master's Degree from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK. After teaching for 23 years she retired in 1975. Following their retirement they moved to Naples, FL. Her husband preceded her in death in 1997. Ethel moved to Coffeyville in 1999 to be closer to her daughter. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Helen Kauffman and husband Bob of Port Orange, FL, and Carol Phillips and husband Barry of Coffeyville; three grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in by her parents, her husband, and one great-grandchild, Zane Michael. Following Mrs. Johnson's wishes cremation will take place and the family will have a memorial service celebrating her life at a later date.
