Obituary of John Dwain Doty

John D. Doty, age 75, of Sedan, Kansas passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at his residence in Sedan. He was born November 9, 1938 in Rural Elk County, Kansas to T.M. “Junior” Doty and E. June (Vanderhoof) Doty. He was born and raised north of Sedan and graduated from Sedan High School. After high school in 1956 he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served his country until he was honorably discharged in 1959. On December 23, 1957 he married Pauline Louise McNown in Belknap, Kansas. They made their home in Chautauqua County, Kansas most of their married life. Pauline preceded him in death on February 8, 2011. John worked for USPS as a mail carrier in Independence and also in Sedan. John and Pauline owned and operated Shadow Oaks Hunting and Fishing Guide service for 15 years. He also cooked at the fairgrounds each year. In his later years he worked for several oil companies as a pumper before his retirement. John was a past member of the Sedan VFW and American Legion, former Boy Scout Leader, and Explorers group leader; he and Pauline won the Soil Conservation Award in Chautauqua County. John was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting; he and Pauline also were involved in starting the Fun Fish Clinic held every year; spending time at the coffee shop where he never met a stranger. Survivors include two daughters, Doris Brown of Enid, Oklahoma and Mary Jane Ullum and husband Mike of Sedan, Kansas; one sister, Atcha Nolan and husband Mike of El Dorado, Kansas, one brother, Tim Doty and wife Lisa of Sedan, Kansas; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and many other family members. John was preceded in death by his wife and one granddaughter, and his parents. Cremation has taken place and a service is not scheduled at this time. The family has suggested memorials to the Fun Fish Clinic, PSP Foundation, or the Chautauqua County 4-H and those remembrances may be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
