Obituary of Wayne D. Powell

Wayne D. “Dutch” Powell, age 95, of Sedan, died Monday, September 22, 2014 at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan. He was born October 3, 1918 in Elgin, Kansas to Oscar Powell and Ruth (King) Powell. He grew up in Elgin and graduated from Elgin High School in 1938. After high school he played semi-professional baseball in the Elgin and surrounding areas until he enlisted in the United States Army where he served four years during World War II. He received two purple hearts and a Bronze Star. On July 31, 1945 he was honorably discharged. On September 15, 1946 he married Barbara Jean McSpadden in Sedan, Kansas. They made their home in the Sedan area all of their married life. Wayne worked as a roustabout and pumper for Denman Oil and various other oil companies. He also owned and operated his own oil production, before his retirement he worked as a machinist at Funk Manufacturing in Coffeyville. He was preceded in death by his wife on March 25, 2014. Wayne was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Epiphany Episcopal Church in Sedan; a member of the Caney Masonic Lodge #324 of Caney, Kansas, a member of the Mirza Shrine Temple of Pittsburg, Kansas; as well as a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion in Sedan; he also enjoyed coaching baseball for many years. Survivors include his two daughters, Annette McMillin and husband David of Independence, Kansas and Kimberly Schmidt of Spring Hill, Kansas; one son, Larry Powell and wife Cindy of Sedan, Kansas; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, two children, Russell Wayne Powell and Paula Jean (Powell) Boulanger, his parents, and numerous brothers and sisters. Church Services will be held Friday, September 26, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Epiphany Episcopal Church in Sedan with The Reverend Foster Mays officiating. Burial will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan. Family and friends may call on Friday, September 26, 2014 FROM 9:30 a.m. until service time at the Epiphany Episcopal Church in Sedan. The family has suggested memorials to the Sedan Baseball Association or the Epiphany Episcopal Church and contributions may be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
