Obituary of Dorothy Jean Cook

Dorothy Jean Cook, 80, of Coffeyville, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2014, at Mercy Hospital in Independence. She was born January 5, 1934, at Bloom, KS to Elmer and Gladys (Sandy) Ward. Her family lived in several different communities where they taught school while she was growing up. When she was in high school they moved to Moline, KS where she graduated from Moline High School. Following high school she attended Fort Hays State University where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. On April 29, 1961, she married Jerry Cook at Esbon, KS. Following their marriage they made their home in Concordia, KS, where she taught school for over 39 years. Her husband preceded her in death on October 11, 2003. After her husband's death she continued to live in Concordia until moving to Coffeyville, KS in 2011 to be closer to her daughter. Mrs. Cook attended the Cornerstone Church in Caney, KS. She enjoyed reading, sewing, and painting, but most of all loved spending time with her family. Survivors include two daughters, Jean Potter and husband Larry of Coffeyville, KS, and Joan Keighley and husband Wayne of Hiawatha, KS; two sisters, Isabelle Bennett of Moline, KS, and Joan Franzen of Broken Arrow, OK; one brother, Elmer Ward of Oberlin, KS; two grandsons; one foster granddaughter; six great-grandchildren, and two foster great-grandchildren. Following her wishes cremation has taken place. The family will meet friends at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, September 29, 2014, at the First Christian Church in Concordia, KS then go to the Fairview Cemetery near Concordia, KS for a memorial graveside service.
