LaVonia M. “Bonnie” McCarty, age 81, of Cedar Vale, died Friday, October 3, 2014 at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan. She was born April 23, 1933 in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri to Andrew Arnold and Marie (Seifert) Arnold. She grew up in Ste. Genevieve County and graduated from St. Mary High School. After high school she received her Associate’s Degree from Mineral Area College in Park Hills, Missouri. On February 24, 1986 she married Harold McCarty in Miami, Oklahoma. They made their home in Cedar Vale, Kansas since 1977. Bonnie worked as a school teacher, at the bank, a secretary at Western Feed Mill, and also at Bluestem Veterinary Clinic before her retirement. She was a former city council member for the City of Cedar Vale and also was active in Chamber of Commerce. She enjoyed playing basketball in her high school days; she loved to sew, raising dogs, chickens, and bottle calves. Survivors include her husband Harold McCarty of Cedar Vale, Kansas; two sons, Chuck Layton of Columbia, Missouri and Craig Layton of Perryville, Missouri; two brothers, Val Arnold of Lake St. Louis, Missouri and Frank Arnold of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri; three sisters, Joyce Alsup of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Delora Schrenk of Granite City, Illinois and Janet Wilson of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri; three grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Cedar Vale Cemetery in Cedar Vale, Kansas with Hospice Chaplain Norman Reeves of Gentiva Hospice officiating. Friends may call at the Cedar Vale Cemetery before service time on Tuesday, October 7, 2014.
