Obituary of Lela (Halderman) Tyson

Lela (Halderman) Tyson, beloved teacher, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother went to be with her Savior on Thursday, October 16, 2014, at the Minneola Long Term Care Unit in Minneola, KS.
Lela Irene Halderman was born on October 9, 1923, to Charles and Sylvia Halderman of rural Sedan. Charles and Sylvia passed away in November, 1932. Lela made her home with Uncle George and Aunt Hazel Davis in Sedan. Later, she moved to the home of her brother Marvin and wife Margaret Halderman. In 1933, Lela was asked to live with J.E. and Frances Caraway, next door neighbors of Marvin Halderman and was adopted by the Caraway's in 1935.
Lela attended Sedan Schools, graduating in 1942. She graduated From Emporia State in 1946, earning a B.S. Degree in Music. From 1946 to 1948, Lela taught vocal music in Dodge City Jr. High School. On April 11, 1948, she was married to Robert L. Tyson of Doge City. Lela was employed by the Haysville School System in 1966 to teach kindergarten and later, first grade. She retired from teaching in 1989, after teaching 25 years.
Lela is survived by a daughter, Julie Ryherd and husband, Rev. Clifford (Kip), of Minneola, and a son Jed Tyson and wife, Sharon, of Wichita. Three grandchildren: Amy (Ryherd) Nightengale and husband, Randy , of Whitefish, MT, Jerrod Ryherd, and wife, Missi, from Olathe, KS and Jeremy Ryherd from Derby, KS; five great-grandchildren, Dylan, Elijah and Ella Nightengale of Whitefish, MT and Cole and Brooks Ryherd from Olathe, KS.
Lela was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Tyson on May 4 1984, her parents and 6 brothers, Marvin, Floyd, Wilbur, Ivan Gilbert and Orman Halderman.
Visitation will be Sunday, October 19, 2014 from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan, KS. Lela's family will be present from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 20, 2014 at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan, KS.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Minneola United Methodist Church (used for Christmas shopping spree at the Long Term Care Unit where Lela passed away) or the West Haysville Baptist Church and may be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, KS 67361.
