Obituary of Elery Dean Joy

Elery Dean Joy, age 95, of Sedan, died Monday, October 20, 2014 at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan. He was born July 28, 1919 in Logan, Oklahoma to Clem Joy and Minnie (Collins) Joy. He grew up in the Logan area and attended country school until the sixth grade. On September 5, 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp. He worked as a cook in the Army before being honorably discharged September 4, 1943. On March 4, 1941 he married Nita Wells and they made their home in rural Chautauqua County as Elery worked as a t.v. repairman and also was a hog farmer for forty years until his retirement. He was preceded in death by his wife on May 30, 1999. On February 7, 2002 he married Anita Hart in Chautauqua, Kansas where they made their home south of Sedan before moving to Sedan a few years ago. Elery was a member of the New Life Baptist Church in Chautauqua, Kansas and a lifetime member of the Sedan American Legion. He loved his grandkids, working, gardening, and his flowers; he also liked to tease. Survivors include his wife Anita Joy of the home in Sedan, Kansas; one daughter, Susan Temple of Olathe, Kansas and one son, Greg Gordon; six grandchildren, twenty five great-grandchildren, and twenty four great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, two daughters, Freda Hill and Patricia Bench, two brothers, and three sisters, and his parents. Church Services will be held Friday, October 24, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the New Life Baptist Church in Chautauqua with Pastor Larrie Adams officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Chautauqua. Family and friends may sign the register book on Friday, October 24, 2014 at the New Life Baptist Church in Chautauqua before service time. The family has suggested memorials to the New Life Baptist Church and contributions may be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361. David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan is in charge of arrangements.
