Paul Ray Benson, 75, of rural Caney, KS, passed away Friday, October 31, 2014, at Mercy Hospital in Independence, KS. He was born October 8, 1939, at rural Watonga, OK to Paul and Fern Marie (Floyd) Benson. When he was nine months old his family moved to rural Wann, OK in the Noxie area where he grew up and attended Witwer Grade School and graduated from Wann High School. On September 10, 1960, he married Carol King at Miami, OK. In 1963, they moved to rural Caney, later moving to Tyro where they made their home for 17 years until returning to their farm in rural Caney. Mr. Benson was a millwright at Moore-Lowry Flour Mill in Coffeyville for several years where he also served as a union representative. He later operated Benson Brothers Auto Repair and Welding in Tyro. In 1993, the Bensons returned to their farm where they raised registered Angus and Braunvieh cattle. Mr. Benson could often be seen driving a truck with the back full of Border Collies he had trained to work cattle and would often get calls from family, friends and neighbors to bring his dogs to help with their cattle. He loved helping other people, caring for his cattle and dogs, and gardening. His greatest enjoyment in recent years was to study the Bible and encourage others to be aware of false teachings. Survivors include his wife, Carol, of the home; two daughters, Paula Benson and Penny (Keith) Osborn; six brothers, Ivan, Bennie, Robert, Tony, Clifford and Larry; one sister, Treva; two grandchildren, Dala Osborn and Thomas (Kylie) Osborn; and one great-granddaughter, Haylee Osborn. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lonnie; and one sister, Doris. Following Mr. Benson's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, November 8, 2014, at Westside Christian Church, 402 N. Ohio, Coffeyville, KS. The family requests no flowers but suggests memorials to Glenn Russell in care of Hispanic Christian Ministries, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or the charity of the donor's choice; contributions may be left with the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 N. Cline Rd., Coffeyville, KS 67337.
