Obituary of Mary Evelyn Johnson

Mary Evelyn Johnson, age 83, of rural Cedar Vale, Kansas, passed away Friday, November 14, 2014 at her home. She was born on July 27, 1931 to George Paine and Rose (Bracken) Paine in St. Paul, Kansas. She grew up in the Arkansas City area and graduated from Ark City High School in 1949. After high school she received her Associates degree from Arkansas City Junior College. On July 29, 1951 she married Mark Johnson in Arkansas City, Kansas. They made their home in the rural Cedar Vale area where she helped her husband with the farm and cattle for many years. She cooked for all the hands as well as helped with the daily farming and cattle. Mary Evelyn was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale, DAR, and Extension Homemakers Union. She was involved in teaching Sunday School and also Vacation Bible School at the church, she read her Bible daily; she enjoyed painting, gardening, canning, cooking, sewing, and many other things; she also was a former 4-H leader. She is survived by her husband Mark Johnson of the home in rural Cedar Vale, Kansas; three daughters, Marla Jean Bowen and husband Danny of Meeker, Oklahoma, Marjorie Gage and husband Bob of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and Maralea Brazee of Cedar Vale, Kansas; one son, Jon Johnson and wife Theresa of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one brother, George Payne and wife Joan of Sun City, Arizona; eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Kathleen Johnson, one brother, Robert Payne, one sister, Rita Homsley, one grandson, John Gamsjager and her parents. Funeral Services will be held Monday, November 17, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale with Reverend Mark Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Ozro Falls Cemetery in rural Hewins, Kansas. Family and friends may call on Monday, November 17, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. until service time at the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale. The family has suggested memorials to the First Baptist Church of Cedar Vale and they may be left in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
