Margaret E. Smith, 86, of Dearing passed away Monday (October 22, 2007) at the Continuous Care Center in Bartlesville, OK.
She was born December, 23, 1920 in Coffeyville to Charley Leroy and Martha Ellen (Rehms) Smith. She grew up and received her education in Coffeyville graduating from Field Kindley High School.
On September 2, 1939 she married William Chester "Chet" Smith at Sedan. Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville and Dearing before moving to Seattle, WA where they lived for 10 years while Mr. Smith was employed by Boeing Aircraft Co. They later moved to Wichita where Mr. Smith continued employment with Boeing and Mrs. Smith was employed at Blair's IGA Store. Following Mr. Smith's retirement in 1972 they returned to Dearing where they owned and operated Smith Grocery Store until retiring in 1979 after selling the store. Mr. Smith preceded her in death on August 13, 2001.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the Dearing Christian Church.
Survivors include two sons, Chester Smith of Winfield, and Larry Smith of Coffeyville; one daughter, Linda Mersberg of Dearing; one brother, Clement Smith of Derby, one half sister Betty Morgan of Broken Arrow, OK; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Richard Smith; one daughter Sheri Robbins; one brother; one sister; and one grandson.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday (October 26, 2007) at the Dearing Christian Church with Reverend Jamie Regis officiating. Burial will be in Robbins Cemetery west of Coffeyville.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
