Sedan -
Allen E. "Gene" Stephenson, 85, of Sedan, passed away Friday morning (September 28, 2007) at his home.
He was born July 31, 1922, on the family farm near Sedan to Hugh Allen and Myrtle May (Howell) Stephenson. He grew up near Sedan where he attended school graduating from Sedan High School in 1941. He later attended and graduated from Kansas State University.
Gene was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp from September 1942 until being discharged in November 1945. While in the Army Air Corp he served as a B-17 Flying Fortress Pilot based in England flying missions over Central Europe.
On July 31 1955 he married Mary L. Kocher at Sedan. Following their marriage they made their home on their farm east of Sedan, where he farmed and ranched. Mrs. Stephenson preceded him in death on October 15, 1978.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sedan.
Survivors include one brother, Clark Stephenson of Colorado Springs, CO; his extended family that he considered his kids and grandchildren, Art and Susie Wade, Niki Wade and Franny Wade all of rural Peru, and Lindsey (Wade) Carter and her husband Chad, and their son, Oakley; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and five brothers.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday (October 2, 2007) in the First United Methodist Church in Sedan, with Rev. Jerry Bever officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Sedan with military honors provided by the U.S. Army Honor Guard, Fort Riley, Kansas.
Friends may call on Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.
Memorials are suggested to the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, KS 67361.
