Coffeyville - Mary A. Staton, 88, of rural Liberty, died Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at Bradford Place in Independence. She was born February 7, 1925, at Independence to Daniel and Jennie (Strecker) Maher. Mary grew up in rural Liberty and attended Pleasant Valley School, she then attended and graduated from Cathedral High School in Wichita. During World War II, Mary and her sisters, Jean and Jo, lived in Washington, DC, while working for the Federal Government. On April 12, 1947, she married Robert C. "Bob" Staton at All Saints Catholic Church in Liberty. Following their marriage they made their home and raised their sons on the family farm in rural Liberty. Her husband preceded her in death on February 4, 2006. When returning to Liberty, Mary became a secretary at Frank Liebert's Law Office. When her sons were older, Mary worked for many years at the Coffeyville Community College Library until retiring. Mary was a lifelong member of All Saints Catholic Church in Liberty, after the church closed she became a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Coffeyville. She was a former member of the Holy Name Altar Society, the Wichita Diocese of Catholic Women, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Mary enjoyed cooking and quilting, and loved spending time with her family. Survivors include three sons, Barry Staton and wife Carol of Cherryvale, Scott Staton of rural Liberty, and Tim Staton and wife Tracey of Raymore, MO; one daughter-in-law, Mariam Staton of rural Caney; two sisters, Jean Quaglione of Coffeyville, and Jo DeTar of rural Liberty; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Dan Staton; two brothers, John Maher, and Ignatius Maher; and three sisters, Agnes Schicke, Catherine Blaes, and Myrtle Schicke. A Rosary Vigil Service will be at 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 25, 2013, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Coffeyville. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013, at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Ben Nguyen and Father Andrew Heiman officiating. Burial will be in All Saints Catholic Cemetery east of Liberty. Friends may call on Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Holy Name Catholic School or Holy Name Catholic Altar Society; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
