Gary L. Miorandi, 69, of Pittsburg, KS, a former resident of Coffeyville, passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2015, and went home to the Lord. He was born on October 16, 1945, at Independence, KS, to Frank V. and Ruth Catherine (Long) Miorandi. Gary grew up and attended school in Coffeyville graduating from Field Kindley High School and Coffeyville Community College. Gary was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He married Patricia Mangels and they had a son, Douglas. They were later divorced. In 1992 he married Jeri Moody Cunningham at Parsons, KS. Following their marriage they lived in Coffeyville until 2002 when they moved to Pittsburg. Gary was a member of the Coffeyville Police Department for 32 years. He served many years as a patrolman and detective and rose to the rank of Lieutenant. While there he was instrumental in establishing the SWAT team. In Pittsburg he was an Investigator for the Kansas Department of Children and Families until his death. He formerly attended the First Southern Baptist Church in Coffeyville, was a member of the V.F.W. Post #1022, the American Legion Post #64, the Fraternal Order of Police, the NRA, the Mako Fly Fishers Club of Missouri, and the Pittsburg Coin Club. Gary was a former member of the Interstate Fair and Rodeo Assoc., and an Assistant and Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 50. He enjoyed fishing especially Fly fishing with his brothers, antiquing, collecting coins, and cowboy reenactments. In his youth he participated in area rodeos in bull and bronc riding and later as a rodeo clown. Survivors include his wife, Jeri of the home; one son Doug Miorandi and wife Heather of Chandler, AZ; one step-daughter, Shelli Cunningham of Parsons, KS; three brothers, John Miorandi of Great Bend, KS, Mickey Miorandi of Riverview, FL, and Larry Miorandi of St. Petersburg, FL; three granddaughters, Matia, Ella, and Avery Miorandi; one step-grandson, Jared Smethwick; 4 nieces and 3 nephews. A Memorial service celebrating Gary's life will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 17th, 2015, at the First Southern Baptist Church in Coffeyville with Pastor James Riekeman officiating. Inurnment will be in Fairview Cemetery and full military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post #1022 and American Legion Post #20. Friends may sign the register book on Friday, October 16th, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
