Obituary of Richard Lisle Frost

Please share a memory of Richard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Richard Lisle "Dick" Frost, 74, of Coffeyville, Kansas, answered the call to come home the evening of Sunday, January 3, 2016. He was tired from battling cancer and we are thankful that he was able to remain at home and enjoy being with his family. He will be missed by those who knew and loved him. Dick was born to Robert Lisle and Gladine Copeland Frost on December 19, 1941, in Coffeyville, Kansas. He grew up in the Edna, Kansas area where he attended school and made many friends. He graduated from Edna High School in 1959. Dick joined the United States Navy in 1960 and served four years. He went to boot camp in San Diego, California and was assigned to the destroyer, the USS Turner Joy. He attended special training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and then was assigned to the commissioning crew of the destroyer, the USS Buchanan where he served until he was discharged at the rank of Machinist Mate 2nd class. Dick loved to talk about his days in the Navy and some of the ports he had visited in Hawaii, Philippine Islands, Japan, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and Australia. He enjoyed comparing and swapping stories with others who were Navy. He went aboard the USS Turner Joy, which is now a museum in Bremerton, Washington, 50 years after joining the Navy and had a blast sharing memories. Dick said the Navy influenced his future work in maintenance and engineering. He was employed by Acme Foundry, Sherwin Williams, Amerisign, Neodesha Implement Company, and the Kansas Army Ammunitions Plant. He retired as the Maintenance Supervisor at Coffeyville Community College in 2006. He like working at the college and eventually returned to the college on a part-time basis until his illness prevented him from working. His knowledge of the college facilities will be missed. Dick was an avid reader and a very intelligent man who was at home talking about any subject. He loved working the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle and when the public library quit subscribing, subscribed to the web site so he would not miss his puzzles. He was interested in a wide range of things and enjoyed watching shows that showed how things were made, how they moved large structures like lighthouses, documentaries, and the history channel. He liked football and boxing. He enjoyed his roses and lilies and he liked animals, but his favorite activity was to spend time with his grandchildren. Dick attended many churches during his lifetime including the Edna Methodist and Baptist churches and the Salvation Army Church in Coffeyville. He was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in rural Wann, Oklahoma, at the time of his death. Dick married Mary Foster in Miami, Oklahoma. They made their home in Coffeyville and were the parents of three children: Jimmie, Dickie, and Sheryl. They divorced in 1990. Dick married Vivian (Roberts) Brinker on July 3, 2003, at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in rural Wann, Oklahoma. Together they made a home in Coffeyville and helped to raise their grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Vivian, of the home, Dick is survived by Mary Frost of Coffeyville; his children: Jimmie and Michelle Frost of Edna; Sheryl and Terry Grier of Coffeyville, Helen Frost and John Mayo of Dearing, Amber Glass and Braulio Flores of Wharton, TX, James Glass of Independence, Andrew and Heather Brinker of Springfield, MO, Amy Brinker of Coffeyville, Tom Briggs of Des Moines, IA; his grandchildren: Brittney Frost and Dakota DeIvernois, Derek and Taylor Frost, Tabby Grier, Terry Grier, Nikki Glass, Brionna Glass, Jaime Glass, Cameron Briggs, Caitlyn Briggs, Eryk Anderson, Kristin Kidneigh, Tim Kidneigh, Brian Tindal, Josh Grier, Hannah Coffey, Amanda Crigler; his great-grandchildren: Addison Frost, Kinsley DeIvernois, Kayleigh Morgan, Braydon Monjay, Lexi Monjay, Courtney Coffey, Nevaeh Coffey, Kevan Coffey, Gracie Grier; his brothers: Raymond Frost and Rex Frost of Coffeyville, and Randy and Rowena Frost of San Francisco, CA; his sisters: Roberta and Burl Sandusky of Lovelock, NV, and Ruth Polson of Nowata; his brothers- and sisters-in-laws: his Aunt Margaret Galloway; many nieces and nephews; his Pleasant Valley Baptist Church family; his Coffeyville Community College family; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Richard Lisle Frost II. The family has honored Dick's request to be cremated. A Celebration of Life with military rites will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 16, 2016, at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in rural Wann, OK, with Bro. Kyle Clutter officiating. The family will host an informal celebration to give relatives and friends a chance to visit and remember Dick from 4:00-6:00 pm in the Coffeyville Community College Rotary Room. Please feel free to attend one or both of the celebrations. The family suggests memorials to the donor's favorite charity in lieu of flowers. Helping others would be the best way to honor Dick. If you don't have a favorite charity it is suggested you donate to the Coffeyville Relay for Life, Coffeyville Community College scholarships, Pleasant Valley Baptist Church youth fund, Coffeyville Boys & Girls Club, Harry Hynes Hospice, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Wounded Warrior Project, or Salvation Army.
