I was new to Coffeyville, KS when Dona came into the Journal to place an 80th birthday announcement and photo of her mother, Mary Ann Pendleton. She was well-organized and excited to get it just right for her mom.
A few days later, a lady came in to thank the newspaper for such a nice writeup; and, of course, I recognized the face and good manners.
Many articles and conversations later, I realized what a thoughtful, and polite person Mary Ann Pendleton was. And though, her followup notes were especially warm and charming, they never lacked the business acumen I came to appreciate in her.
The Pendletons were lovely and welcoming to me. Mary Ann will be remembered.

Glenna, Dona and Grace,
I only found out this AM that your sweet mom had died. I am so sorry to hear this. I will always remember Mary Ann's energy and her fun personality. I had not seen her since 2009 when I was in town for Glenna's FKHS reunion. We all had lunch together that day. What a wonderful lady and what a wonderful life she had here on earth. Your mom and dad certainly raised wonderful children. Mary Ann touched many many lives and will be missed by so many as well.
Love to each of you and your families.

I am sorry to hear of Mary Ann's passing. She was a wonderful, sweet lady! She will be greatly missed by her family and by all of those whose lives she touched! I was a student of hers in the early 80's. Still today, I use skills that she taught me and I have thought of her often. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.

I have many wonderful memories of Mary Ann, getting to know her as another Mom, through my friendship with Glenna. I'll always remember Saturdays spent at the house one summer where she gave me a "job" helping to clean with Glenna and then having lunch afterward. She was a big part of our growing up years for me, Debbie Armstrong, Janet Reardon and Brenda Beam along with Glenna, through school activities, church and then at CCC. Most of all, she was a wonderful extended family member to us girls and many others! She is loved and she will be dearly missed!

So sorry to hear about Mary Ann. While she was always busy doing something, she freely gave of her time when we stopped in to see her as we passed by the house, usually on the way home to Caney. Mary Ann was like a second Mother to my brother, Steve, while he attended CCC. She told me that during the winter, Steve would often crash at her house for a night during the winter months when she didn't want him to ride his motorcycle home in bad weather. When I began my genealogical research, she was one of my first stops to see what she had on the Pendleton branch of the family.
Mary Ann will be missed by all who knew her. When I think of one of my favorite quotes, I think of her: "The life I touch for good or ill will touch another life, and that in turn another, until who knows where the trembling stops or in what far place my touch will be felt."--Frederick Buechner. Mary Ann's touch will be felt for generations on the good side.
I don't think I will be able to make the funeral or visitation, but the entire family is in our thoughts and prayers.

So sorry for your loss! Your Mom was one of my favorite people of all times! The time I spent with her at CCC left many fond memories! I still think back and smile when I think of all she did to try to improve my spelling. Even started a phonics class at the Jr. College to help those of us who never had phonics going through grade school. It may have helped a little! lol She was always trying to help everyone who wanted to learn. Every day she would walk into my secretarial procedures class and say "Shively spell receive". We would all laugh and I would proceed to spell it every day. I thought the world of her and still do! My prayers are with you all! It is never easy to say goodbye, but we will all see her again someday. She will probably meet me in heaven saying. You can spell perfectly now! lol
The obit. was beautiful and so showed her life and loves!

Coffeyville was lucky to have been the place Mary Ann and Jack called home. As is obvious from her obituary, her energy, determination, compassion and intelligence were all inspiring to be around. When I would visit Coffeyville and go to church with Mom, I could always count on her to come greet me and welcome me back. She was fiercely loyal, and would often comment on how much she appreciated my grandfather, Orvil Carter, giving her employment when she was first starting out. The last time I saw her was about a year ago when I was leading singing at Asbury Village. She wasn't able to join in the singing, but I sat with her a bit afterwards and she was able to silently greet me in her own way. Mary Ann was one of those unsung heroes who made Coffeyville such a terrific place to grow up in so many years ago. I join others in being grateful for having known her and in offering condolences to her family..

She has left a wonderful legacy in her family, her students, her many friends, and her community. My condolences to all the family and other mourning her passing. She has become a lively, caring angel, I am sure!

I was so sad to hear of Mary Ann's passing. We grew to love one another. I loved to listen to her enthusiasm. She was such a generous, caring person who gave so much to so many. The thing I liked about her most was that she was not afraid to tell the facts about a situation, good, bad, or ugly. A very truthful soul. Several years ago I got a big envelop in the mail. She had kept many clippings of things related to me and sent them to me. I was so thrilled to receive them and somewhat in awe that she had kept them for me. I learned so much from Mary Ann and am grateful to have known her.
She loved her family so much. I'll keep her family in my prayers that they may be comforted and have peace, knowing her legacy lives on in so many; a life well-lived.
