Coffeyville - Richard LeRoy "Doc" Stout, 85, of Independence, formerly of Elk City and Coffeyville, passed away Saturday, May 31, 2008 at the Continuous Care Center in Bartlesville, OK. He was born February 7, 1923 in Nowata County, OK near South Coffeyville to John Emery and Betty (Smith) Stout. He grew up in Nowata County and attended school at Wann, graduating from Wann High School. ` On October 30, 1942 he married Virginia Ferguson at Coffeyville. Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville. In April 1943, Doc joined the U.S. Army Air Force serving as a tail gunner on a B-17, completing 35 missions over Germany and France. He received his honorable discharge in June 1945. Following his discharge he returned to Coffeyville where he was employed as a Sandblaster and Painter at North American Tank Car Company. In 1964 they were transferred to Texarkana, Arkansas where they made their home until he retired in 1986. Following retirement they moved to Elk City, KS where they lived until moving to Independence in 2005. Mr. Stout formerly attended the Pentecostal Church and the First Church of the Nazarene in Coffeyville. He was also a member of the V.F.W. Post in Elk City. Survivors include his wife, Virginia of the home; three daughters, Anita Baker and Diana Lesslie both of Independence, and Sybil Blue of Anchorage, Alaska; one brother, Tom Ottinger of Copan, OK; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at Restlawn Memorial Park in Coffeyville, with military honors conducted by the U.S. Army Honor Guard, Fort Riley, KS, and color guard provided by the Elk City V.F.W. Post. Friends may call on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the Elk City V.F.W. Post; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 N. Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
