I was very sad to hear of Les' passing.
We lost one of this life's treasures when Les passed. He loved to play Bluegrass music, and when he arrived at the jams he spent little time talking and would tell all of the musicians let's play music - I have just so much time until I have to start back home. And he kept the jam sessions rolling by suggesting we play this or that tune and various songs. I'll really miss him at the sessions.
He was very generous with his talents, too, made a wooden tool for me at his wood working class that worked like a charm in my repair shop. I tried to pay him something for it but he would have nothing of it.
God received a great man into heaven.

So sorry for your loss of Les, your memories are forever. We had a great time in H.S. full of memories. Our vocations took the same path but somehow we got lost in the shuffle. I have thinking you for several days and have missed the funny times. God speed friend.

Diana, There was this tall, skinny freckle faced kid with a good smile and a great often funny way of looking at things. Les was good people, a good friend, and constant. That isn't something you pay that much attention to when you are a kid but it is one of the stand out things I remember. I remember the beginnings of a courtship in JCCC. Les would just be a part of the group and then you would come into the union and he just lit up. It was nice because we all felt Les deserved something, someone really special. I know you will miss him and carry him always in your heart. Each of us who knew him was the better for it. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Nisha

Mr. VanWinkle was my 7th grade Shop teacher at McKinley Junior High School in Coffeyville. "72-'73 school year. I had no contact with him after that school year. I'm writing today, to let you all know that I have never forgotten Mr. VanWinkle. I really enjoyed that shop class, and for many years, kept some of the cutting boards, metal address plates etc.that I made there. If my memory serves me correctly, I remember him being gone for kidney stone surgery. Mr. VanWinkle was never to busy to come in and help those of us with no talent for woodworking. It always seemed like he really enjoyed teaching us and through the rest of my H.S. and college years, I never forgot him. I am one of many former students who will always have great memories of him. He indeed touched many lives and will be greatly missed. My wife Kimberly and I will be praying for your family at this time.
Take care, Mark T. Myers

My sympathies to the family. Les was my 9th grade basketball coach in 1969-70 and I have looked up to him and respected him since. He was a true gentleman, and when our paths crossed through the years he always had time for a kind word. He will be missed.

I am so saddened to read this obituary. I knew Les through the office I worked at and I really loved the conversations we would have. He brought us all cutting boards he'd made. He told stories of his family and wood working and of him and Diana in their younger years. I would've loved to had been his granddaughter! Working in a dental office, I got to know so many of our patients on another level and had some favorites. The VanWinkles were definitely a couple of my favorites. My heart and prayers go out to his many family and friends and hope his wonderful memories help heal your hearts.

Leslie and I grew up together in the grade school and Jr. High era. He was a great friend back then. He was a stand up guy. We were partners selling Grit papers every Saturday. Not a lot of money, but we grinded pretty hard to sell those papers. Unfortunately he broke his arm in 6th grade costing us the championship. He was by far the best player. He never quit on anything, even when I tried to convince him otherwise on a few deals. I was so sorry to hear of his passing. My prayers are with his family and friends. I remember in Boy Scouts he built his bird house and saw how bad mine was and built mine also. That's what kind of a guy he was. A really nice guy even way back then!!

I was saddened to learn of the passing of one of the nicest, most Christian men I have had the pleasure to work with. Les was one of the best principals I had the fortune of being associated with in my thirty years of teaching music. I know he will be missed by the family, friends, and teachers he was a friend and colleague of. Thank you Les, for all you did for me and my students at Caney Valley Jr. Sr. High School. I hope to see you again some day. Dan
