Obituary of Mabel L. Williams

Mabel Lydia Williams, 98, passed away peacefully May 16, 2017 in Omaha, Nebraska. Mabel was born April 28, 1919 near Lincoln, Missouri, the sixth of seven children. Her father died in 1924 but her hard-working family managed to hold on to their small farm throughout the depression. Much to Mabel's disappointment, she had to leave school after the eighth grade to seek employment. She married Norman Wray Williams January 1, 1941; they were married 50 years before his death is 1991. Mabel has two children, son, Max (Omaha) and daughter, Patricia (Houston). Her husband was employed by the Missouri Pacific RR resulting in several early career moves within Missouri followed by transfers to Eads, Colorado in 1948, Council Grove, Kansas in 1950, and Coffeyville, Kansas in 1966. Mabel worked outside the home after her children were older, always remaining active in her local Lutheran churches. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, bridge, and RV'ing with her husband after he retired. She enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and Europe and especially enjoyed cruise vacations with her children. She became an avid reader later in life and continued to play bridge and watch college sports – particularly Kansas State football. She lived in Coffeyville for 48 years followed by a move to Parsons House, Omaha , in 2014 to be closer to family. In addition to her two children, she is survived by one sister, Edna Klindworth; her loving daughter-in-law, Linda; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Matthew, Rebecca; and three great-grandchildren, Mason, Grayson, Mia. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and three sisters. A Memorial Service will be held in Omaha on Friday, June 9th at 10:00 a.m.in the Parsons House Chapel, 14325 Eagle Run Drive (Roeder Mortuary, Omaha). Coffeyville friends are invited to visit with the family between 10:00 a.m.-Noon on Saturday, June 10th at David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 N. Cline Road. Interment will follow immediately at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mabel's name may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 506 W. 9th Street, Coffeyville, KS 67337 or Hospice House, The Josie Harper Residence, 7415 Cedar Street, Omaha, NE 68124.
