I am sorry to hear of the death of Mr. Nellis.
When I was attending CCC 1963-65, I was unsure of what I wanted to be, but I was hanging around with Robert Nellis who suggested I enroll in one of his Dad's accounting classes. I did so, and that laid the groundwork for my career. I went on to Pittsburg State University then to the University of Tulsa for MBA work.
I worked with some of the largest Oil and Gas companies and Electrical energy providers in managerial and executive positions including controller. I got my CPA and began consulting work with companies concerning selection, implementation and upgrades of accounting systems.
All of this because of Mr. Nellis. He was an excellent professor, always making accounting seem interesting, which is no easy task. I enjoyed working with him at the scorer's table for basketball games, and knowing him on a personal basis. I feel lucky for the influence he had on my life.
Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

So sorry for your lost. Will miss seeing his smiling face at our Bunko games. He loved to fill in and play with the Bunko ladies. We had lots of laughs. He was a man of many talents and used them wisely, making true friends where ever he went. Rest in peace.

I was so sad to hear of Gilmer's passing. He was a long time friend of our family, especially to my Dad. Many the time I saw my Dad, Gilmer, and Dr. Graham sitting, talking, and laughing (Dad had probably told one of his funny stories). Gilmer was a great person, patriot, loyal fan of the college. My condolences to Betty and the family. I know he will be greatly missed. A life well lived.

I just received the very sad telephone call from Robert. I was a newly-hired faculty member in August of 1971, at CCJC. At 22, I had much to learn about life in a very foreign environment, but I had the fortunate mentoring from some amazing people. The most memorable, kind, and wise mentoring came from Gilmer. Yes, he respected me as a professional faculty member and colleague, but he also recognized me as someone whom he could trust and count on as a confidant. Robert knows lots of other shared stories from my college time. I also recalled such times Gilmer and I worked football and basketball games. I also recall working on spec houses with the gang. Through the very short three years in Coffeyville, my closeness with the Nellis family almost persuaded me not to leave for a doctoral program at Nebraska. Up until two years, Gilmer and I called each other almost every year. I can still hear his voice and laugh after these many years. What a happy time in my early professional and personal life. It is to Gilmer and his family (and others like Ward Witherspoon) that helped me become a person who "serves first, before self." May God continue to have rich blessings on the Nellis family-Jeff

Betty, I'm so sorry for the loss of Gilmer. I enjoyed being around him at the lake so much. Ornery guy as friendly as can be. Always busy doing something. He will be missed. Hope to see you at the lake, although I know it's getting harder and harder to get there. Hugs

Mr. Nellis was my first accounting teacher and got me interested in continuing my education in the field of accounting. I remember him from the class I took in 1960. From reading his obituary I can see what a great man he was. My condolences to his family.
