Obituary of Winona Mayfield
Winona Jean (Raymond) Mayfield of Coffeyville passed away peacefully on January 27, 2018. Winona was born April 2, 1930, outside of Altamont, KS, to George and Estelle Raymond. Growing up on a farm, she loved the companionship of her horse and many dogs and became a life long animal lover. She began elementary school a year earlier than most, as the country school house she attended needed one more student to keep its' doors open! After graduating from Labette County High School she moved to Oswego, Kansas, where she was employed as a secretary at the Kraft Foods Plant. In those days, it was highly unusual for a young, single woman to have a career and live by herself, but Winona was very independent and remained so throughout her life. Winona moved to Coffeyville in 1955 to work for the Page Milk Company, and shortly thereafter, she met her husband, Donald Mayfield, on a blind date. They married 6 weeks later on November 6, 1955 and were married for nearly 50 years until Mr. Mayfield's death in September of 2005.
Winona was a stay-at-home mother for many years with the birth of her daughter, Dana. She loved being part of her daughter's activities and never missed a dance performance, school play, or piano recital. She taught Vacation Bible School at the First Baptist Church, was Homeroom Mother for many years at Edgewood Elementary School, and was a volunteer for the Campfire Girls. Winona was well-known for her impeccable sense of fashion, and mother and daughter enjoyed many hours shopping together and trying on the latest styles. Winona was also an excellent seamstress and made most of her and Dana's wardrobes, which included beautiful coats, hats, formals, and elaborate dance costumes. Upon becoming a grandmother, she stitched together many unique Halloween costumes and Easter outfits for her grandchildren.
When her daughter was older, Winona began working part-time at Kistler Oil Company as a bookkeeper where she made many life-long friends. Several years later, she became the bookkeeper/office manager at Nu-Way Foodliner where she remained until retirement.
Winona and Don enjoyed traveling in their motor home during retirement, making many trips to both Colorado and Montana to visit their grandchildren for birthdays, holidays, and other special events. On her last trip to Montana, Winona got to see one granddaughter go to Prom and another perform in a dance recital.
Surviving to honor Winona's memory are daughter and son-in-law, Dana and Daniel Adamson of Helena, MT, granddaughters Emily and Molly, both of Missoula, MT, Maggy of Butte, MT, and grandson Jack, of Helena. Also surviving are sisters Wanda Houts of Neodasha, KS, and Linda (Charles) Daniel of Bartlesville, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place and no services are planned to respect the deceased's wishes. Memorial contributions may be made in Winona's name to Coffeyville Friends of Animals in c/o David W Barnes Funeral Home, 306 N Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS, 67337.
